Technical Talks at our 2003 meetings
The World of
Millimeter Waves
Joe, AH6RQ talked about the SSMIS
sensor that he worked on before retiring to Maui. This was a 24 channel millimeter
wave passive radiometric sensor that flys on an Air Force Weather Satellite.
Channel frequencies ranged from 19 to 183 GHz . Joe shared some of the challenges of
developing and testing space qualified hardware at these frequencies. Also
discussed were some of the interesting applications of passive millimeter-
wave radiometry and data products that the SSMIS sensor produces.
P.S.
The first SSMIS was launched after the talk and Joe is
proud to report that it is working very well.
Practical Antenna Design
John, K6GSS gave a presentation on the design
theory and real world performance of some antennas. A lot of information was
presented that just doesn't appear in the handbooks but is learned over
the years in the school of hard knocks!
Propagation
Joe, AH6RQ gave a talk on propagation that
included the ionosphere, solar effects, some special propagation modes and
understanding m.u.f. Joe's talk addressed both the basic theory
and more complex and subtle aspects of propagation.
Guam
Jason, WH6BXK, shared his experiences in providing communications support
for the DMAT effort in Guam following damage by super typhoon Ponsona. We
learned some real world problems in emergency communications.
APRS reporting and GPS
Lane, KE7UT gave a very interesting talk on APRS ans GPS in general. We
fired up the computer in our meeting room and viewed a practical demonstration.
